NHS Digital outlines key elements of 2017/18 programme

Organisation plans to work on 15 technology projects with local authorities, and will work to assess digital maturity of care homes in order to beef up their information governance

NHS Digital has indicated some of the key projects it expects to be working on over the forthcoming year.

The details, which were set to be announced in April but then held up by purdah as a result of the General Election, emerged in a presentation at the InterSystems Joined Up Health & Care conference taking place near Birmingham today.

The Work Programme for 2017/18 includes a range of new initiatives, including 15 technology projects with local authorities.  It will also carrying out digital maturity assessments of local authorities and care homes, and seek to roll out Information Governance (IG) Guidance, while supporting care homes to use it and keep up to date.

An area that NHS Digital is interested in is that care homes need to be brought up to speed on information governance and information security. Most care homes, it is understood, would currently probably not be able to send a secure email.

Another element of the 2017/18 programme includes using sector influence to simplify the IG Toolkit and requirements to access NHSmail, exploring using the Messaging Service for Medical Discharge and defining the current Medical Discharge Standard to be of greater use to social care.

NHS Digital also wants to establish a national capability for Assessment, Discharge and Withdrawal Messaging and designing and testing a deployment model for ADW Messaging for 2018.

Assessment, Discharge and Withdrawal Notices are used to support compliance with the Care Act 2014. They are used to support the discharge of hospital patients that are considered to have social care needs.

NHS Digital has also indicated it plans to work with suppliers in creating a more standardised social care vocabulary and terminology.
